Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband : El Salvador Market Insights, Development, Research and Forecast 2018

ResearchMoz presents professional and in-depth study of "El Salvador - Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband - Statistics and Analyses".

El Salvador selects ISDB-Tb standard for DTTV services
El Salvador has a small economy and population, while growth in its telecom sector has been restricted by poor infrastructure and unequal income distribution.

There have been organisational delays which have retarded the development of DTTV and LTE services, though into 2017 much progress in these areas has been evident. Indeed the telecom sector has been one of the more successful within the overall economy.

El Salvador’s fixed-line teledensity is substantially lower than the Latin American and Caribbean average. However, there has been a significant drop in the number of fixed lines since 2010, largely due to the substitution for mobile-only alternatives.

Mobile penetration is remarkably high considering El Salvador’s economic indicators, being about a third higher than average for Latin America and the Caribbean. Of the estimated total number of telephones in the country, 10% are fixed and 90% are mobile. The country was one of the last in the region to provide LTE services. This was mainly due to the inadequate provision of suitable spectrum. A multi-spectrum auction is expected later in 2017 which will allow the mobile network operators to improve the reach and quality of their LTE offerings. Movistar by mid-2017 offered LTE to all provincial capitals, while Tigo is investing up to $1 billion in network infrastructure to extend LTE to 80% of the population by 2020. The switch from analogue to digital broadcasting, though delayed, will also release valuable spectrum in the 700MHz band for mobile broadband use.

El Salvador’s telecom legislation is one of the more liberal in Latin America, encouraging competition in most aspects of the telecoms sector and permitting foreign investment in all areas. However, there are no regulations as yet which promote wholesale broadband, and thus in the DSL market Claro retains a virtual monopoly. The only effective cross-platform competition in the broadband market comes from the few cable operators. There has been some market consolidation in recent years, and in mid-2017 the regulator stepped in to enforce provisions related to the proposed acquisition by Telemóvil of the regional cable TV provider Caribena Cable.

Through this process of consolidation a few dominant multinational operators have emerged (notably Millicom’s Tigo, América Móvil’s Claro, and Telefónica’s Movistar), which have managed to expand into almost all sectors through a process of convergence.

The mobile market is served by five operators: Tigo, Movistar, Claro, Digicel, and Intelfon. The outlook is especially promising for mobile broadband, where competition between Claro, Tigo, and Telefónica will oblige the operators to diversify services and reduce prices.

Key developments:

    Regulator again consults on delayed AWS band auction;
    Competition authority imposes conditions for Telemóvil’s proposed acquisition of Caribena Cable;
    Number Portability gains customer popularity;
    Digicel expands reach of HSPA+ services;

Poland - Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband : Competitive Dynamics & Global Outlook 2018

ResearchMoz presents professional and in-depth study of "Poland - Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband - Statistics and Analyses".

Poland’s liberalised telecom market has seen considerable development in recent years, with the regulatory environment having been shaped by EU principles designed to facilitate competition and encourage competing operators to enter the market. Recently this extended to opening Orange Poland’s fibre network to access and pricing regulation.

The fixed broadband market has benefited from excellent cross-platform competition, with comprehensive DSL infrastructure complemented by extensive cable networks and a growing fibre presence. Commercial considerations meant that fibre was for some years restricted to a number of urban areas, though more recently the sector has received considerable financial support from the government and the EU aimed at building fibre-based networks across the country and promoting fibre connectivity to end-users. As a result, the proportion of broadband subscribers receiving a service of at least 100Mb/s has increased sharply in recent years.

Orange Poland still dominates the fixed broadband market although there has been some consolidation among operators. UPC Poland in particular has grown through acquisitions, though its bid to take over the cable assets of Multimedia Polska was abandoned in early 2018 following regulatory concerns over the proposed deal’s impact on market competition.

The mobile market has been characterised by the rapid extension of LTE networks and the development of mobile data services based on newly released and refarmed spectrum. In addition, the regulator and operators alike are preparing for 5G, with the regulator embarking on a long-term strategy and with operators such as Orange Poland preparing to trial services based on 5G technologies in 2019.

Mobile penetration in Poland is above the European average, standing at almost 141% by early 2018. This reflects the continuing popularity among consumers to keep two or more SIM cards, which has distorted the real mobile penetration rate. The distortion has been addressed on two fronts: by network operators being encouraged to disconnect dormant SIM cards, and by legislation, effective from February 2017, which obliges subscribers of prepaid services to register their details. This has resulted in a significant readjustment in the number of subscribers in the market.

Explored In Latest Research Of Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband Market in Rwanda Industry 2018

ResearchMoz presents professional and in-depth study of "Rwanda - Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband - Statistics and Analyses".

The Rwandan telecom market continues to develop strongly, buttressed by sustained GDP growth which has seen the country develop one the fastest-growing economies in the world. Supported by significant foreign aid, this growth has been helped by prudent fiscal and monetary policies which have create a business-friendly environment conducive to investment.

Nevertheless, poverty remains widespread. There is little economic diversity, with most of the population engaged in agriculture and a good proportion of the remainder involved in mineral and agro-processing sectors. The financial services sector is also underdeveloped: with banks focussed on government borrowing there is little attention paid to the support of small businesses, and most of the population has little or no access to conventional banking services. In turn, this has made Rwanda one of the more successful markets on the continent for mobile banking and payment services.

The country was slow to liberalise the mobile sector, allowing MTN a monopoly until 2006 when the fixed-line incumbent, Rwandatel (since acquired by Liquid Telecom) became the second mobile operator. There has been effective competition among the three current operators, each of which provides wide geographic coverage. The launch of services from Tigo in 2009 sparked renewed subscriber growth, though competition has eroded mobile services revenue and ARPU since then. However, the acquisition of Tigo by Airtel, a deal to be closed over a two-year period, will see the Tigo brand removed and a significant consolidation in the market.

Rwanda’s internet and broadband sector has suffered from limited fixed-line infrastructure and high prices. Nevertheless, operators are rolling out national fibre-optic backbone networks which also allow them to connect to the international submarine fibre-optic cables on the African east coast. These cables have given the entire region fibre-based international bandwidth for the first time and brought to an end its dependency on satellites. Suring 2018 Liquid Telecom has continued to expand its FttP services across Kigali and a number of other towns.

Interest from investors in the country’s ICT sector remains strong. A deal with Korea Telecom has developed a wholesale LTE operator, Korea Telecom Rwanda Networks, which provides retail services to a number of fixed-line operators as well as to the mobile network operators. The number of subscribers on LTE infrastructure increased 200% in 2016, year-on-year.

This report contains an overview and analysis of Rwanda’s telecommunications market, profiles of the major players in all market sectors, relevant statistics and analysis, and mobile subscriber forecasts to 2023.

Key developments:

MTN to invest $20 million in network upgrades; Millicom sells its Tigo Rwanda unit to Airtel, with the Tigo brand to be phased out; government commits to investing in smart city infrastructure; MTN Rwanda fined for moving IT services abroad; Liquid Telecom expands FttP network; fleet of buses equipped with LTE routers to provide mobile broadband for passengers; regulator calls for interested parties to manage Mobile Number Portability facility; MNOs implement One Network Area scheme removing roaming charges; Smart Africa Alliance Initiative to raise $300 billion by 2020 for regional ICT infrastructure; KTRN expands wholesale LTE services; report update includes the regulator’s market data to February 2018, telcos’ operating data to Q4 2017, Telecom Maturity Index tables, charts and analyses, recent market developments.

Overview of Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband Industry : Yemen Market Development, Analysis and Demand 2018

ResearchMoz presents professional and in-depth study of "Yemen - Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband - Statistics and Analyses".

Civil unrest in Yemen has created a challenging environment for telecoms operators
The short-term outlook remains difficult for the telecoms operators in Yemen. The challenging environment which currently exists is a result of the ongoing conflict between opposing parties which flared again in late 2014 and continues today. International concern has mounted regarding the growing humanitarian issues in Yemen, with famine and food shortages rising, along with a severe cholera outbreak.

The unrelenting military activity has impacted heavily upon Yemen’s economy as well as reportedly causing severe destruction to the country’s infrastructure, including telecommunications equipment. Telecoms operators also face the challenge of a market which is inhibited by the lack of an independent regulator.

Yemen had done much to upgrade and expand its telecom sector prior to the civil unrest. However tele-density remains among the lowest in the Arab states, reflecting Yemen’s status as one of the poorest countries in the region.

Current mobile penetration levels indicate there is much room for growth, with prepaid services accounting for the majority of mobile subscriptions. Yemen’s mobile data market is in the nascent stages of development, with mobile messaging and mobile Internet access offered. Serious competition is unlikely until the GSM operators are permitted to launch mass market 3G services however.

A further inhibitor to the uptake of both Internet and mobile broadband services has been the high costs. Fixed home Internet access is expensive with consumers required to purchase a router and pay for on-going monthly bundles, which can be cost prohibitive. For this reason, many citizens choose to utilize Internet cafes instead. Mobile broadband services, as well as smart phone devices, are also very expensive and beyond the reach of much of the population where many live below the poverty line.

Please note: Yemen can be a difficult market to research given the volatile civil unrest and rising concerns regarding famine. All recent statistics are estimated only as the current situation is largely unknown. There is reportedly significant destruction to telecoms infrastructure.

Key developments:

    Over 80% of the population is reportedly in need of humanitarian assistance in Yemen.
    There have been reports that a significant amount of Yemen’s telecoms infrastructure services is no longer operational due to being destroyed or damaged as part of the civil fighting.
    TeleYemen joined a consortium that would see the build-out of a new submarine cable, due for completion in 2018. Known as the Djibouti Africa Regional Express (DARE) initiative, the cable will link Tanzania, Kenya, Somalia, Somaliland, Yemen and Djibouti.
    Yemen citizens are faced with high telecom service costs along with heavy subsidies for items such as fuel.
    Prepaid services have been instrumental in encouraging mobile take up by the mass market.
